The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has appointed Limpho Moeti as its chair, following the conclusion of Zak Whaley’s term in June, making her the organisation’s first chair from the global south.

Moeti has worked in the South African games industry for almost a decade, starting out at indie studio Freelives, before co-creating and running Cape Town-based game event Playtopia, and then joining Semblance developer Nyamakop.

Most recently, she worked as a business development manager at consultancy agency, RocketRide Games.

She is also deeply involved in the South African gaming community, organising game jams, speaking at events, and panels.

“It’s something that I’m deeply passionate about, particularly with a focus on growing industries, creating a sustainable, long-term industry, and one that is representative of the country, that is representative of all of the different kinds of people who consume and enjoy games [and] should also be able to make games,” Moeti told GamesIndustry.biz in 2024.

The IDGA also announced Le Cabinet du Savoir Ludique’s Nazih Fares as vice chair, Women in Games ambassador coordinator Mafalda Duarte as secretary, and Tim Cullings, executive director of Seattle Indies, as treasurer.

In addition, Whaley will remain on the board as chair emeritus until March 2026.

“The IGDA’s executive leadership team brings together a majority of women and non-binary developers alongside a majority of leaders of color, marking a powerful reflection of a more inclusive future in the games industry,” the IGDA said in a press release announcing the new appointments.

The non-profit organization’s current priorities include growing its mentorship programs, creating new partnerships with endemic and non-endemic organizations, and expanding programming designed to help developers connect, collaborate, and find work.

“Limpho, Nazih, Mafalda, and Tim bring passion and unique approaches to supporting the organization,” said Dr. Jakin Vela, IGDA executive director.

“Their leadership and expertise will strengthen IGDA’s global connections, expand mentorship offerings, and create lasting partnerships that empower game developers at every stage of their careers.”

“I’m humbled to step into this role at such a pivotal moment for our industry,” Moeti added.

“The IGDA is especially vital for those historically underserved, and we will continue to champion inclusivity, sustainability, and opportunities for all game creators.”
