Alongside recognising some of the biggest and best releases of the last year, such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong, there were – as always – game reveals aplenty at The Game Awards.
Industry Highlights
LucasFilm continues to double down on its licensing model for Star Wars, with two new titles in Fate of the Old Republic and Galactic Racer. The former is being helmed by BioWare vet Casey Hudson, who worked on the original KOTOR, while the latter is being made by the Criterion vets at Fuse Games and being published by indie label Secret Mode, formerly of Sumo Group.
Meanwhile, after a fairly lengthy hiatus, Lara Croft is back with not one but two games. Both are being published by Amazon; the first is a new title called Catalyst made by Crystal Dynamics, while the second is a remake of the original Tomb Raider, called Legacy of Atlantis, which is being co-produced by Polish developer Flying Wild Hog.
There was also a number of projects from companies that have long coveted a place in the AAA space: NetEase had two games on stage from talent it has poached from its Japanese rivals, Capcom and Sega, in the form of hack and slash Stupid Never Dies and the heavily Yakuza-inspired God of Dragon. Meanwhile, Wizards of the Coast, which has long sought its own presence in video games, showed off two projects: the previously announced Exodus and the newly revealed Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, both from veteran developers at new AAA studios under the tabletop giant’s umbrella.
Following the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Belgian developer Larian Studios is returning to its own venerable Divinity franchise. The new game is simply called Divinity and, according to studio founder Swen Vincke, is the company’s most “biggest most ambitious RPG” to date.
Boston Consulting Group recently observed that live-service titles had peaked and the showing at this year’s Game Awards seems to reflect that. While NetEase was on-stage revealing new content for team shooter Marvel Rivals and Blizzard revealed new Diablo 4 expansion Lord of Hatred, the only other game that seems to fit the service-based model is Highguard from the Respawn veterans at Wildlight.
