The Outsiders co-founder, David Goldfarb, has confirmed that the team is “not dead,” and he is “working on something” with the plan of “getting everything together” for the 2.0 version of the studio.

After informing GamesIndustry.biz in a statement last October that the open-world survival game Dune: Awakening was “the biggest release we’ve had in our 32-year long history of making great games,” Funcom then announced it would be laying off staff due to a studio restructuring. As part of wider cuts, Goldfarb’s studio The Outsiders, was also shuttered.

Now, in a new interview with PC Gamer, Goldfarb acknowledged that Metal: Hellsinger “didn’t sell enough,” but with “the market […] the way that it is, it’s very hard to stay alive” after that.

“We’re working on the 2.0 version of The Outsiders, so we’re not dead. We’re just getting everything together so that we [can] continue,” he said.

“We’re working on something, and we’re talking to people. And then, if things work out, we’ll be in a position to go ahead and make that, and maybe get some of our old colleagues back. That’s the dream.

“It’s a tough time right now to be seeking funds,” he added. “Weirdly, it never bothers me. I’m always like, ‘It’ll work out for us’. It’s just a question of when and who. But it’ll work out.”
