Ubisoft Halifax staff officially form union

Staff at Ubisoft’s Halifax studio have officially formed a union.

CTV reports that 61 workers at the office have joined the Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada, Local 30111, after being certified by the Nova Scotia Labour Board on December 18, 2025.

The staff have branded their bargaining unit Ubisoft Workers of Canada, Halifax.

Local 30111 also represents Montreal staff at Bethesda Game Studios.

Ubisoft Halifax lead programmer Jon Huffman has described the decision as a “huge relief” adding that almost 74% of staff voted in favour of forming a union. This includes staff from the firm’s programming, production, design, art and R&D departments.

“73.8 per cent were in favour of unionising,” he said. “It’s a really strong turnout. Everyone who was eligible to vote, voted. It’s a clear response from the membership.”

This is the first bargaining unit formed within Ubisoft’s North American business. The Halifax staff first announced their plan to unionise in June 2025. A vote was held that month, but this allegedly could not be tallied due to challenges from Ubisoft. This was ultimately dropped and votes were counted in December.

“Even though it’s taken this long to certify, we’re still dedicated to doing this with Ubisoft,” Huffman said. “We love where we work, we love who we work with. We’re in this for the long haul.”

In a mission statement on the Ubisoft Workers of Canada website, the bargaining unit stated that it was committed to “one another and to our craft.”

“In an era marked by industry-wide uncertainty, studio closures, layoffs, and increasing instability, we want to make clear our commitment to one another and to our craft,” they said.

“We believe that creativity flourishes when workers feel secure, supported, and empowered. We are unionising not in opposition to Ubisoft, but in partnership, with the goal of ensuring our studio remains a beacon of equity, excellence, and innovation.”

They continued: “Unionising gives us, the workers, a meaningful voice among decision-makers, a voice that will help shape the future of Ubisoft Halifax and the industry at large. Together, we will continue to build timeless experiences for players and forge a modern, compassionate, and resilient workplace for all who contribute to our craft.”
