Industry veteran Shinji Mikami has founded a new AAA studio called Unbound.
As noted by VGC , the studio’s website has been live for “at least a year” but was “only recently widely circulated.” Mikami formed Unbound in 2022, which began operations in 2023.
THe studio is described as a “fully independent company” developing AAA titles and original IP for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Unbound has about 50 staff members and plans to grow to 150. One employee is Masato Kimura, a longtime collaborator of Mikami who worked on titles including Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.
Kimura said Unbound is “aiming for AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world.”
“Creating something new requires repeated trial and error, implementation and modification, tinkering, and sometimes even deletion,” he explained. “Because we create by repeatedly building and breaking, trying this and that, things don’t always go as planned, and the content changes constantly.
“To put it in a positive way, it’s a lively production style, a flexible development style. The programmers we work with have to be willing to put up with that all the way through, so we want people who enjoy that way of creating to join us.”
Unbound is not the only new studio Mikami has been linked to since leaving Tango Gameworks in February 2023.
He formed Kamuy in 2024, which was revealed when the website for Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered listed Mikami as the studio’s founder under the game’s creator tab.
