Capcom has launched a new roguelike minigame for Resident Evil Requiem featuring fresh challenges for Leon S. Kennedy, rather than the series’ usual Mercenaries mode that many fans were expecting.

The minigame, titled “Leon Must Die Forever,” was quietly launched overnight, with fans spotting a fresh update for Requiem dropping first on PC and PlayStation.

Leon Must Die Forever is essentially a roguelike set of levels featuring familiar enemies and environments, and random weapons and special abilities. The ultimate goal is to get to Victor, the game’s final boss.

Levels take place in rough chronological order, so you’ll start in Wrenwood’s main street, head to the Care Center and then Raccoon City. As you progress, enemies will naturally become tougher — but you can complete challenges to exchange credits for better gear. Death is permanent, the mode warns you, though there are several difficulty levels for players to try.

“Grace made it home safely, but Leon still has work to do,” reads Capcom’s blurb for the mode. “Use his enhanced abilities to complete this minigame as fast as possible.”

As previously stated by Capcom, the new mode is only available for players who have completed Requiem’s main campaign (though, that should be most fans by now). After you’ve done so (and updated your game) Leon Must Die Forever will be available to play from the game’s main menu.

Capcom had kept details of the mode under wraps, leading many to assume this addition would be a fresh version of the Resident Evil franchise’s popular Mercenaries mode, where players can control different characters to take down waves of enemies. Alas, this is not the case — and right now, there’s no suggestion that Requiem will gain a Mercenaries experience.

Of course, Capcom isn’t done adding content to Requiem. A major new story add-on is now in development, though still a little way from launching. Fans hope this fresh chapter will feature more of Resident Evil’s wider cast (such as Ada Wong and Chris Redfield) and answer the mystery of Leon’s new piece of jewellery, though details are currently thin on the ground.

Capcom recently confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem had sold a stunning 7 million copies, enough that it has raised its profit forecast for the year. “Resident Evil Requiem successfully splices two separate strains of survival horror together into the one highly infectious new mutation,” IGN wrote, awarding the game 9/10 in our Resident Evil Requiem review.
