Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Details Revealed

Activision and Infinity Ward have seen the feedback, and that’s why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will feature a new take on DMZ with “a deeper, more cohesive, and more persistent combat experience.”

The team behind the 2026 Call of Duty video game pulled back the curtain on its latest swing at an extraction experience with a blog post on its website today. The PvP and PvE landscape has come a long way since the FPS franchise last tested the waters, and that’s why this version of the mode already sounds quite different from what fans will recall.

Call of Duty fans will remember DMZ’s beta debut in 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. That iteration of the side experience aimed to pull players in with gameplay inspired by extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov but was mostly met with mixed reactions from fans. Although some core PvE ideas were carried over to Modern Warfare 3’s MWZ mode, this time around, Activision and Infinity Ward are treating DMZ as more of a 1.0 release, with its post promising a mode built by player feedback rather than just another experiment.

Modern Warfare 4 plops DMZ players into Hajin, an open exclusion zone set on the tri-point region on the border of Russia and the Korean peninsula. This version of the area is connected with the events of Modern Warfare 4, keeping the story going with narrative-driven Story Missions and multi-step objectives in Dynamic Operations. Of course, if you’re just looking to engage with what Activision called an “immersive, living world” by fighting AI enemies and the occasional player-controlled Operator, you will have the option to free roam, too.

“Following the events of the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign, an exclusion zone across the Korean peninsula remains saturated with abandoned military technology, weapons stockpiles, and destabilizing threats,” a story description for DMZ said. “Operating as a shadow CIA asset, you are deployed behind enemy lines and tasked with securing the various weapons and technology left behind before they fall into enemy hands.

“Both Rogue Operators and enemy combatants are active throughout the zone, forcing every squad to decide when to cooperate, when to engage, and when to disappear before tensions escalate.”

Within what Infinity Ward calls “one of the largest and most ambitious Call of Duty environments ever built,” which can be altered by environmental effects like rain and fog, is a Forward Operating Base. This player hub can be upgraded with new services, with highlights including a 3D Printer crafting station, a Stash to save your inventory, a firing range, and more. It’s also been billed as a social hub to regroup with teammates, but if PvP is more your speed, you can check out the new Bounty Leaderboard.

Focusing on taking down rival Operators in Hajin will cause players to build notoriety and climb the leaderboards. That puts a price on the head of the more successful soldiers, encouraging PvP for those looking to extract with big payouts for nabbing high-value dog tags.

“DMZ is built on the learnings of the DMZ Beta and everything we love as fans of the extraction genre,” Infinity Ward said in a post on X/Twitter. “We’re launching with dedicated progression in DMZ. All XP earned in DMZ will progress your DMZ Rank. Progress and unlock unique traits for each of your operators and create builds for multiple playstyles with individual Active Duty slots.”

DMZ launches alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026, for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S. We’ll learn more about the mode when the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 airs tomorrow, June 7.

Until then, you can read about how Infinity Ward is evaluating skill-based matchmaking after Black Ops 7 and why the studio is telling players to “keep the receipts” when it comes to its commitment to grounded skins. You can also check out IGN’s multiplayer first impressions.
