Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed the remake trilogy’s finale will feature “one singular ending” for everyone, but players will have a lot of freedom to shape Cloud’s final chapter.

The developer commented on Square Enix’s approach to choice in the recently announced game during a conversation with GamesRadar+. Like Remake and Rebirth before it, Revelation will put Cloud in situations that require him to make choices that can affect the world around him.

Hamaguchi suggested that, as Square Enix aimed to drive home its theme of “resolve,” the team didn’t want fans to finish the story feeling like everyone had the same experience. For Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, that means making this last leg of the journey feel just as personal for the players controlling the story as it does for Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and the rest of the gang.

“This goes without saying, but our heroes, Cloud and his companions, are beloved by a lot of fans around the world,” he said via translator. “But when we thought about that, we didn’t want to just kind of deliver a singular storytelling experience for every single player around the world. We wanted each player – each fan – to have a unique experience as they head on to the final battle.”

That means a return to the kind of freedom that let players guide the story in Remake and Rebirth. Instead of taking Cloud’s crush on a date at The Golden Saucer, Hamaguchi teased that, in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, some of these player choice-driven moments could affect the story up to the final battle.

“The idea is to kind of change the approach and the depth of these story moments for these characters in this final chapter,” he said. “We hope players look forward to that moment in the game.”

The reimagined story of Final Fantasy 7 started with the launch of Remake in 2020, but fans have waited to see this story told long before then. Even by the time Square Enix had announced its remake trilogy’s first chapter in June 2015, fans had waited years for the news to break. Now, as we approach the end of that wait, next year, Hamaguchi knows fans are going to have a lot of feelings, good and bad.

He mentioned that the story’s final moments will certainly “receive a lot of attention from our fans” because many of them “are worrying – or just being curious – about how it’s going to play out in the end.” Despite the team’s commitment to making sure Final Fantasy 7 Revelation lets players finish the story in their own special way, you can rest assured, knowing that the remake saga’s decade-in-the-making final moments will be tied up with one “singular ending.”

“There won’t be multiple endings that would change depending on the players’ choices,” Hamaguchi clarified. “But the process of how we get there to that singular ending might be a bit different between the players based on the choices that they make throughout the game. That might mean that some players might have a different emotion as they get to the story ending, so that’s kind of the difference that they might have.”

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was announced at Summer Game Fest 2026 and is set to launch simultaneously for PC, via Steam and Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in spring 2027. Loads of new details about the final chapter have come out since, including confirmation that the English version of Sephiroth will be played by a new actor. For more, you can read about what Hamaguchi had to say about the team’s tweaked approach to mini-games.
