Sony Interactive Entertainment is cutting jobs at Destiny maker Bungie.

In an internal email, published to the PlayStation firm’s website, Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst said that a “significant number” of staff are affected by this news, including “most of the Destiny team” as well as “some Marathon team members”.

To be specific, 292 staff are being let go, according to a WARN filing with Washington State’s Employment Security Department.

In addition to Bungie staff being let go, Hulst said that some Sony Interactive Entertainment staff who supported the studio have been made redundant.

“This is painful news, especially for talented colleagues whose roles have been eliminated,” Hulst wrote. “This decision was made only after extensive discussion and careful consideration, and I want to provide some context on how we arrived here. Over the past several months, together with Bungie leadership, we reviewed the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within our broader portfolio strategy. We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.”

Bungie had already announced that it was closing development on Destiny 2; Hulst described the studio’s work on the sci-fi shooter franchise as “truly remarkable”. He added that Marathon “remains an important part of our portfolio” and that Sony will support Bungie’s continued work on the extraction shooter as well as future projects that are seemingly in the early stages.

In May, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Bungie was planning significant staff cuts.

PlayStation acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022 but wrote down the purchase price by $765 million during its 2025/26 financial year. That’s 21% of the value of the deal.

In 2023, it was reported that Sony would take full control of Bungie if the studio did not hit financial targets set after its acquisition.
