The developer of Marvel Contest of Champions, Kabam, has laid off an unknown number of employees as part of a consolidation of its office in Los Angeles, California.

The move has been confirmed to Game Developer, though a spokesperson for the company did not provide any additional information on how many people have lost their roles. So far, no WARN notices have been filed with California’s Employment Development Department, either.

“Following a review of strategic priorities, Kabam made the decision to consolidate its LA office and streamline operations,” a spokesperson for the company said.

“This wasn’t a decision made lightly, and the company remains focused on its slate and committed to its partners.”

So far, one member of Kabam LA staff has taken to LinkedIn that they have been laid off and that they are looking for work.

Kabam’s presence in Los Angeles is the result of the company acquiring local studios Tapzen – which had been founded by industry veteran Mike Verdu – and Magic Pixel Games back in 2015. These two developers were later merged into a new Kabam outfit based in Culver City, headed up by Verdu.

In 2017, Kabam was acquired by South Korean Netmarble; five years later in 2022, the former was merged into the latter’s US arm, resulting in another Los Angeles office under the Kabam name.

Best known for Marvel Contest of Champions, a game that has generated $2 billion to date, Kabam also entered into a partnership with the House of Mouse in Disney Mirrorverse, though it was shut down in December 2024.

In 2022 and 2023, Kabam made layoffs.
