Between Ascended Heroes being what feels like the most popular we’ve seen since Destined Rivals, and the burden of the 30th Anniversary set fast approaching, Pokémon isn’t exactly an easy hobby to have these days, especially for the more casual fans out there chasing some fun cards.

Pokémon Cards: Retailers You Can Trust
When it comes to buying Pokémon cards, it’s best to know what sites you can trust, especially among the major retailers. For those just starting out, here’s a quick cheat sheet on what retailers you should frequent often when looking for the best times to buy.
For the most casual fans out there I recommend sticking to TCGplayer, Amazon, and then your local stores for any of your TCG purchases. TCGplayer is the most trustworthy resale marketplace online, and while you’re still paying above and beyond (i.e. above MSRP, almost always), it’s still worth considering.
Amazon also typically always has at least some Pokémon TCG sets in stock these days, even if, just like TCGplayer, they are above MSRP. We’ll discuss “Market Price” a little more in a bit, but for now, it’s simply the way things are with Pokémon TCG. For those looking for an easy experience, “market” rate is what you have to pay, you either get with it, or miss out entirely. Well, not entirely, but it becomes a whole lot more of a headache to navigate, that’s for sure.

It’s easy to list them off, a lot harder to find in practice. But, I’ll do what I can to help. In the US, The Pokémon Center, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy all typically have Pokémon TCG drops at some time or another.
Walmart likes to lock these behind its paid Walmart+ membership, while Best Buy tends to drop these as “app exclusives” with a login required to access. Target just drops them whenever it feels like it, so you have to be primed and ready to buy.
As this is just my day job, I don’t typically have the time (like most people) to be hanging around waiting for a drop to then write up an article before they inevitably sell out before I can hit publish.

Pokémon TCG: What is Market Price?
No matter how unfortunate it is how hard it is to find Pokémon TCG at MSRP, market value is often the price you have to pay now, even from big retailers like Amazon, as I mentioned.
But is it worth it? Only you can be the judge of that.
The “market price” is often dictated by what the majority of people are willing to pay, but only you can decide if this if truely worth your money. You can easily find a good idea of what the current rate is for any particular set or card by looking at the data on TCGplayer.
So what’s the difference between this and scalping? I guess… perspective? It’s a hard distinction to make, in all honesty, but I’ll still never judge anyone for buying overpriced sealed products from TCGplayer or Amazon. What’s important is that you get to make the choice on where you buy from, and how much effort you want to put in when collecting Pokémon cards.
