Not too long ago, we put together a wishlist of seven Magic: The Gathering crossovers we’d love to see in Universes Beyond (whether that’s in 2027 or in the next few years). Well, I’ve been thinking about it again, and, frankly, there are still far too many great possibilities out there to stop at seven.
With Magic’s Universes Beyond lineup continuing to expand, I’ve decided to throw six more potential crossovers into the ring. Some are obvious, some are perhaps a little more out there, but all of them feel like they’d fit surprisingly well into Magic’s increasingly expansive multiverse.
As we covered in that original wishlist, we know Magic has three more Universes Beyond sets lined up for 2027, arriving in April, August, and November.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has also suggested that next year’s crossovers will be “a bit more fantasy-adjacent”, following feedback from fans on some of the more recent collaborations.
That still leaves a huge amount of room for speculation, and more than enough fantasy worlds we’d love to see collide with Magic. So, here’s our sequel: six more Universes Beyond crossovers we’d love to see.
The Elder Scrolls
Starting things off, The Elder Scrolls. While we are still painstakingly awaiting The Elder Scrolls VI, an eventual crossover with Magic: The Gathering wouldn’t be beyond the realms of imagination, especially if we’re talking epic fantasy.
Bethesda has already partnered with Magic as part of the Universes Beyond: Fallout set, so extending that partnership to Bethesda’s other gaming titan… It just works.
Honestly, I probably should have included this in the original article. I can absolutely see this happening in the near future. Whether that’s in 2027, or whenever The Elder Scrolls VI eventually releases in the (fingers crossed) next few years.
Supernatural
Okay, admittedly, this is one of my more “out there” picks for a Magic: The Gathering crossover. It’s absolutely fantasy-adjacent, but its 21st-century setting may put off more than a few diehard Magic fans. Still, I’m going to die on this hill, because I genuinely think Supernatural could make for a fantastic Universes Beyond set.
The show’s mythology almost already feels tailor-made. Magic has Angels and Demons as established creature types, while the show’s spells, rituals, curses and supernatural artefacts could slot neatly into the game’s existing card types. Then you’ve got 15 seasons of monsters, supernatural creatures and a ridiclously extensive cast of characters to draw from. It pretty much sorts itself at this rate.
Plus, Universes Beyond has already shown that Magic can accommodate worlds that look and feel very different from its traditional fantasy settings. If anything, the show’s grimy Americana, roadside diners, abandoned churches, forests and endless motel rooms could give the set a visual identity unlike anything else in Magic.
Beyond all that, Supernatural was an absolutely massive part of the TV landscape for years, and the nostalgia for it is very real. A set like this would be tapping into a fanbase that grew up with Sam and Dean, making it a potentially huge nostalgia play for both Supernatural fans and new Magic players.
The Chronicles Of Narnia
If Wizards of the Coast really is looking to lean further into fantasy with its next Universes Beyond sets, then The Chronicles of Narnia feels like an obvious contender. It’s difficult to think of many properties that fit Magic’s traditional fantasy aesthetic quite as naturally, with talking animals, witches, kings, mythical creatures and epic battles all baked into the world of Narnia.
There’s also a huge amount of material to work with across the seven books, from Aslan, the Pevensie siblings and the White Witch to Mr. Tumnus, Caspian, Reepicheep and the countless creatures of Narnia. And while the books are decades old, the movies from the 2000s mean there’s a hefty dose of nostalgia here too. Plus, there’s that Greta Gerwig adaptation upcoming in 2027 as well.
Narnia feels like exactly the kind of crossover that could appeal to both longtime Magic players and a whole new audience, while being one of the easiest Universes Beyond properties to slot into Magic’s fantasy world.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
If we’re talking about properties that could tap into a serious well of nostalgia, Buffy the Vampire Slayer feels like another strong contender. Like Supernatural, it’s a modern setting that might seem a little strange alongside Magic’s traditional fantasy worlds, but the actual subject matter fits surprisingly well… again!
Vampires, demons, witches, werewolves, ghosts and a whole host of other supernatural nasties would give Wizards plenty to work with. Albeit, again, similarly to Supernatural, so I wouldn’t expect to see both in Universes Beyond.
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere Universe
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere Universe feel tailor-made for Universes Beyond. Sanderson has previously said that WotC reached out for a potential partnership, but progress stalled a couple of years ago due to other projects taking priority.
Whether split into distinct Mistborn and Stormlight Archive Commander decks within a complete set, or launched as a full tentpole release for each series, this feels like a match made in heaven.
Because Sanderson is an outspoken MTG player, who has previously written official lore for Wizards of the Coast, the connection goes far deeper than basic brand synergy as well.
So, this seems like another sure bet to me, if both parties can get things up and running again.
The Wheel of Time
If Wizards really does want to lean into more fantasy-adjacent Universes Beyond sets, Robert Jordan’s sprawling fantasy world seems almost tailor-made for Magic. Somehow I’m also mentioning Brandon Sanderson again as well, who famously stepped in to bring Jordan’s masterwork across the finish line.
The Wheel of Time gives you an enormous amount of material to work with, so this seems like an easy fit, whether that’s in 2027, or beyond that. And with the recent Amazon series introducing the world to a new generation of fans, the timing feels pretty good too. If only they hadn’t cancelled it, it was getting really good!
