Wardogs has already surpassed a million copies sold and is lighting up Steam’s concurrent player charts.

Earlier today, developer Bulkhead launched its brand new all-out warfare FPS, Wardogs. The game has been one of the more highly anticipated shooters of this year and players are showing up for it in force. According to the developer, the game has already surpassed a million copies sold, and SteamDB shows that the game has over 300,000 concurrent players. As a result, a lot of players are being put into server queues, preventing them from getting directly into the action.

“To cross a million copies sold as we launch into early access is mental,” said Joe Brammer, CEO at Bulkhead. “We’ve spent the last few months showing people exactly what Wardogs is, what it isn’t, and at one point literally gave everyone ten reasons not to buy it. We didn’t want people buying into blind hype. So seeing more than one million people choose to jump in and play the game at early access launch means a huge amount to all of us. But this is still early access. We’ve got things to fix, things we want to improve and a lot more we want to build. The best thing players can do now is keep playing, keep telling us what they think and keep giving us those ridiculous Wardogs moments.”

Wardogs is currently only available on PC, making its debut sales numbers all the more impressive, but it is coming to consoles. Bulkhead confirmed that Wardogs is targeting a 2028 release for PS5 and Xbox, but didn’t offer a concrete release date. The developer has also noted that it expects the hype to die down eventually, as they plan to take their time when it comes to releasing new content and therefore there may be drops in player counts.

However, it’s a strong debut from a new multiplayer shooter. Whether the game can keep players interested to keep returning as new content is added remains to be seen, but it’s great to have something other than Call of Duty and Battlefield making an impact. Wardogs attempts to find a unique balance between mil-sims like Arma and something a bit more casual like Battlefield, resulting in a tense, grounded, but large-scale experience filled with emergent moments. So far, players seem to be eating it up and it will likely only continue to grow its audience as word of mouth spreads.
