Marvel’s Wolverine Players Are Testing Its Motorcycle Sequence to See if Logan Can Die if You Don’t Touch the Controller

Marvel’s Wolverine has kicked off no end of debates on social media, with the latest of these centering around a chase sequence that sees Logan weaving through traffic on a motorcycle.

Insomniac’s new superhero game is the latest hot-button topic in the gaming community. Well before it even released, players were calling out early gameplay footage shown off by the media, taking umbrage with a Sentinel boss fight (it was too formulaic), its voice acting (who hired these anime voice actors for my grisly X-Men game?) and Logan following a scent trail to track down enemies (too hand-holdy).

Now that it’s finally out in the wild, players have had a swath of mixed opinions on the title; some are absolutely loving it and finding it a decent challenge, while others are disappointed by its combat, perceived lack of difficulty, and impossible-to-fail QTEs.

This last complaint has reared its head specifically around a sequence where players are meant to chase down enemies on a motorcycle, dodging and weaving through traffic on a winding highway in the mountains. Logan is desperately trying to rescue a group of captured mutants who’ve been shoved onto a truck, and the situation is dire — but some players have discovered that he’ll successfully catch up to the bad guys regardless of whether or not you actually pilot him in the right direction.

One of the most viral examples of this came from an X user named Clint Beastwood, who claimed to have put down his controller to see what would happen to Logan if he didn’t interfere. The result was Logan bouncing off of guard rails like a high-stakes game of pinball, somehow making his way through the sequence without dying.

However, it is possible for him to die after getting hit by on coming vehicles, though he’s paradoxically more likely to meet an untimely end if players actually take hold of the controller and try to help him avoid ending up like a bug on someone’s windshield.

The resulting conversation has been a heated one; players are at odds with each other, with some finding this a comparatively small issue in a sequence meant to get players from point A to point B, while others, like YouTuber ChicoFilo, are calling the lack of player agency “just ridiculous.”

“This here is a total disgrace,” Brazilian influencer Eloohzinha said. “It’s [a] QTE that you don’t even need to press, it’s a bike that you don’t need to ride.”

Decided to play Wolverine on the HARDEST difficulty and honestly it’s been fun but this is just ridiculous 😭 #Wolverine #Playstation pic.twitter.com/fnoqSKazV6

“If Wolverine gets hit while on the bike, he can die. So you do need to control the bike. It’s posts like this that hurt real conversations around games,” popular YouTuber Mightykeef argued. “…if you can die, then it’s not autopilot. You need to control the bike, or else you can die and start over again. This type of on-rails segment happens in hundreds of action games.”

“Keyword being ‘if,’ when ‘if’ shouldn’t exist,” another user hit back. “There’s plenty of videos already out there showing players getting through the entire sequence without dying, regardless of difficulty.”

For now, players will just have to pick up the game themselves to form their own opinions on it. We at IGN gave it a six out of 10, saying its “good character work props up flashy combat that wears thin over time.” (Personally, I’m enjoying the game so far, and haven’t been annoyed by scent trails or QTEs just yet. I also liked the Omega Red boss fight, which seems to have been tripping up quite a few players onine.)
