Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly surveying developers to find out their thoughts on the decision to end disc support for its PlayStation console.
That’s according to the Moore’s Law is Dead channel over on YouTube, which reports that this is a substantial survey that seeks, indirectly, to find out how creators feel about the end of physical games.
“There is a survey Sony sent out to developers – [that’s] what I was told by my contacts – that is a bigger survey than they’ve sent almost ever before, if not ever before,” Moore’s Law is Dead host Tom said, as reported by Eurogamer.
“And there was a question in it basically trying to ask in a not direct way: is there any issue with how we sell games physically, or something – asking developers for feedback on killing discs.”
Word that PlayStation planned to end disc production, starting in January 2028, broke in July.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” SIE wrote at the time.
“This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”
According to Game File, four-fifths of games purchased on PlayStation 4 and 5 in the last financial year were bought digitally.
Despite this data point, games companies have lamented Sony’s decision. Premium collectors edition specialist Iam8bit told GamesIndustry.biz that it was “profoundly disappointed” by the move, while Lost in Cult said it was “deeply saddened” by the decision.
Meanwhile, PM Studios’ Michael Yum said that the shift was “sad and devastating”.
