Hideo Kojima Teases Live-Action Movie, Anime Cameos

Hideo Kojima teased that he’s got a cameo in a “big” live-action movie, but he’s not saying which one we’ll see him in quite yet.

The Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator enticed film fans to theorize about his movie career during a surprise installment in the Koji10 podcast. In between talking about Physint and what’s next for his Kojima Productions, the famed game developer revealed that he would appear in movie theaters as part of a big new live-action movie cameo.

“I already shot a few other things,” Kojima said, as translated through YouTube’s English captions (via @Genki_JPN). “Directors and others have asked me to.”

The topic came up when reminiscing about his time doing voice acting work as a mole in Zootopia 2. While the Japanese version of the Pixar film had him provide his talents behind the scenes, he suggested this mysterious new project will allow him to be in front of the camera in some capacity.

So as not to spoil the surprise, he said he “can’t say” what it is yet, but it is a “big movie.” It is indeed live-action, too, but his involvement is so secretive for now that he even refused to tell his hosts where he shot his part.

Kojima is best known for his work as a game developer, but he’s also a well-read cinephile, too. Fans routinely turn up for his reviews of movies like Superman, Backrooms, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and more. Even his social media biography jokes that “70% of my body is made of movies,” so it’s no surprise to see him continue to be as involved in film as he can manage.

Many have also already started speculating when exactly we’ll see Kojima show up, too, even if no one has any truly solid leads to go on yet. Some have guessed we’ll see him in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 3 this December, while others suggested he’ll show up in The Legend of Zelda movie, or even next month’s Godzilla Minus Zero. Other guesses come from those who are just happy to see their favorite game creator show up in live-action at all.

“Hideo Kojima will return in Avengers: Doomsday,” one fan said.

Kojima also said his future in entertainment will see him in not one but two “major anime” titles. These are “really big” but still a mystery for audiences for now, with the developer only saying that he has speaking lines coming up. He also said that an upcoming game cameo – a concept that is far from new for him – is also a secret, though fans have already found evidence that he’s been scanned for Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

In terms of Kojima’s main occupation, he’s still very much at work on his new espionage action game, Physint. He offered an update on the Bill Skarsgård-starring title’s progress during today’s podcast, too, teasing that many of the characters’ names have already been decided, and their actors scanned. He’s also still heads-down working on his horror game, OD.
