An analysis from Sensor Tower shows just how far ahead GTA 6 is in terms of preorders when compared with some of the biggest AAA games of the past six years.
The analytics firm collected preorder data for recent huge hits such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Diablo 4 (2023), Hogwarts Legacy (2023), and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023), then compared them with the preorder trajectory for GTA 6.
Modern Warfare 2 was one of the most successful games of recent years: preorder numbers for the shooter were more than double the number for Diablo 4 at 45 days from launch, and Modern Warfare 2 had the biggest opening weekend for Call of Duty at $800 million (Black Ops 6 would later become the biggest launch in Call of Duty’s history in 2024, but it was also the first CoD title to launch day and date on Game Pass).
Currently, in terms of preorder numbers, GTA 6 is 148% ahead of Modern Warfare 2 at this point from launch.
However, it’s worth noting that this analysis does not cover boxed releases: Sensor Tower’s comparison data only covers digital preorders in the United States.
The firm estimates that as of October 13, GTA 6 has now been preordered 6.08 million times, which equates to an estimated revenue of $594 million. Sensor Tower says 74% of preorders have been on PlayStation and 26% on Xbox, and the vast majority of preorders have been for the $100 ultimate edition of GTA 6.
GTA 6 is currently set to be the biggest launch in the history of the industry. Earlier this year, GamesIndustry.biz asked a range of analysts for their predictions on how many units GTA 6 would sell in its first year, and the estimates ranged from 30 million to more than 50 million.
