Ed Boon Wants to Know What Fans Want the Next Mortal Kombat Game to Be Called

Ed Boon is stirring up excitement in the fighting game community after releasing a poll asking fans what they’d like the next Mortal Kombat installment to be called.

It’s been a rough time for Mortal Kombat fans. The series’ latest game, MK1, officially stopped receiving new content updates in May 2025, and its presence at competitive tournaments has been lackluster, at best.

Players are eager for more news on the next game in the franchise, which co-creator Ed Boon confirmed was officially in the works in May 2026. It’s been pretty quiet since then — but now, it appears that Boon is testing the waters to see what fans are expecting.

Mortal Kombat Flawless Victory: A Visual History of the Iconic Series Excerpt

On November 6, 2026, Boon published two polls on X/Twitter. The first asked, “What would you want the next Mortal Kombat to be called?” giving options for Mortal Kombat 13, Mortal Kombat 12, and Mortal Kombat 2. (Thus far, 43% of participants have voted for Mortal Kombat 2, with 33% choosing 13 and 23% choosing 12.)

His second poll is far more intriguing, asking: “With two great Marvel fighting games being made by different teams, which would you like to see come out next? Marvel Tokon 2 by Arc System Works, or Marvel vs Capcom 4?” (Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming majority of fans chose MvC4.)

Marvel vs Capcom 4

This is an interesting query coming from the developer of the Injustice series, and an odd one, given that the likelihood of another Marvel vs Capcom game happening anytime soon — if ever — seems extremely improbable. The FGC has already tied itself in knots about Tokon’s player count and difficult PC launch, while, mechanically, there’s a significant divide as to whether or not it’s actually fun at a competitive level. On the other hand, the MvC series appeared to die a slow, painful death with Infinite, though it has received a second wind over the last few years (in no small part thanks to the Beyond fan mod).

This question follows oodles of rumors regarding the next Injustice game, which has been all but outright confirmed by Boon. Fans have already uncovered resumes from stunt performers that list Injustice 3, and rumors that playtests were underway for the game surfaced earlier this year.

Boon reacted to the rumors back in September in response to a tweet claiming that NetherRealm was testing Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, and / or Mortal Kombat 9. “All false,” he wrote. “Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm, but just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development.”

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Boon and NetherRealm have in store for their next game. In the meantime, you can read our interview with the cast of the Street Fighter movie, who said they’re more than willing to take part in a crossover film with the cast of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Boon even responded to our report, saying that he’d rather have a Street Fighter x Mortal Kombat game before a movie gets made.
