Key Takeaways
- Wolverine will reportedly not be part of the X-Men reboot
- Hugh Jackman will continue to play Wolverine for now
- Marvel is keeping Wolverine out of the reboot to explore other characters for spotlight
Marvel is rebooting X-Men, but a significant character will reportedly not be featured. The mutant in question was just seen on the big screen.
X-Men is coming to the cinemas and fans can’t wait for it. However, one of the popular characters would not be joining the reboot. Apparently, it appears that Marvel has decided to stick with the original actor and while this is for sure fine with fans, the character isn’t part of their plans for the upcoming film. Thus, the powerful mutant will reportedly not be present when the other superheroes reunite in the upcoming flick.
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was last seen in Deadpool & Wolverine. Despite his return as the superhero with adamantium claws, there were rumors that he wasn’t part of the new X-Men script. Industry insider Daniel Richtman shared an update about the anticipated reboot and seemingly confirmed it. “I hear the current treatment for the MCU X-Men reboot does not include Wolverine at all,” Daniel Richtman wrote on Patreon. If this is true, the reboot will omit an X-Men icon instead of recasting it and introducing a new actor to portray Wolverine. He added, “The rest of the team is similar to the ‘X-Men 97‘ cartoon plus some. But no Wolverine because Hugh Jackman is sticking around for now. Likely even post ‘Secret Wars.”
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, acknowledged Jackman’s huge contributions as Wolverine. Jackman has portrayed the character since 2000 and announced his retirement in 2017, saying Logan would be his last film as Wolverine. However, he reprised his superhero role again to headline the 2024 movie Deadpool & Wolverine with his close pal Ryan Reynolds. The film was a massive success. Marvel is keeping Jackman as Wolverine, with Feige telling Discussing Film that “if somebody were to attempt to do a Hugh Jackman as Wolverine impression, that would be a pretty big mistake.” Unfortunately, Marvel has no definite plans for the character, but the studio is open to exploring other versions of Wolverine in the decades to come. “If that happens, it would have to be a very different and bold reinterpretation of [the character] because no one will be as great as Hugh Jackman at doing his version of Wolverine,” Feige explained.
The report about Wolverine not being on the X-Men reboot is not yet confirmed. However, if this were true, fans would surely be disappointed. Wolverine is arguably the most famous character from the franchise, with Jackman’s portrayal making the superhero legendary for over two decades already. Marvel Studios carefully plans their projects, so if they don’t include Wolverine in the reboot, they may have other plans for him or a broader storyline to explore in the future featuring him.
It’s also possible that Marvel wants a break from Wolverine following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. Jackman’s presence could overshadow the other cast members, so a reboot without him will allow other characters like Cyclops, Storm, or Jean Grey to be in the spotlight. Another movie insider previously shared that the reboot is to feature Angel, Iceman and Jubilee. Some were hoping to see Rogue, Gambit, X-23 and Beast. Wolverine is an icon, and his absence will surely spark discussion among fans. However, in the end, everything depends on Marvel as to who the characters will be included in the reboot.
MCU’s X-Men reboot has no release date yet, but all X-Men films are available to stream on Disney Plus.
