The closer fans get to the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the more it seems like it could be the complete package. Though last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has its fans, the game had no original maps on launch, and its campaign was incredibly short and devoid of the thrilling setpieces fans come to expect from the franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, on the other hand, is set to offer 16 original maps, a full-length campaign that ties in directly with Black Ops 1, 2, and Cold War, and the long-awaited return of round-based Zombies.
For many long-time Call of Duty fans, it’s that last inclusion that’s really ramping up excitement levels. Black Ops Cold War‘s Outbreak and Modern Warfare 3‘s open-world Zombies modes were fun experiments, but they didn’t quite achieve the tone and atmosphere that fans want from the classic horde mode. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 could right the ship, however, with Terminus and Liberty Falls both being traditional round-based maps set to appear on launch day. But Treyarch also has a hidden weapon that it can use to weather any potential storms that could come its way after release.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies Is Getting a Third Map Before 2025
Fans Are Divided on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies Maps
Since its first set of announcement trailers back in June, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has continued to slowly drip-feed fans more information about the game’s Zombies mode. Terminus was the first map to get a more extended breakdown, with fans being shown its intro cinematic and a few flashes of gameplay back in August. Set in a prison located on a floating island in the middle of the Philippine Sea, Terminus hearkens back to beloved maps like Shi No Numa, Zetsubou No Shima, and Mob of the Dead, and long-time fans can’t wait to dive in to discover all of its secrets.
Liberty Falls, on the other hand, doesn’t have many long-time Call of Duty: Zombies fans quite as excited. Following the footage shown during August’s Call of Duty: NEXT event, some fans have concerns over Liberty Falls’ art direction and general map layout, with some thinking it looks too similar to Cold War and MW3‘s larger open-world maps, which themselves were criticized for looking too much like a Warzone map. Of course, fans should reserve their judgment until Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s full release, but there is a chance Liberty Falls might not meet some fans’ expectations.
A Third Zombies Map Will Solve Problems Before They Even Appear
But even if Liberty Falls doesn’t meet expectations, Treyarch has a powerful ace up its sleeve. During the aforementioned Call of Duty: NEXT event, the podcast CODPOD briefly took over the event’s main feed. During the live podcast, Treyarch’s Associate Director of Design, Kevin Drew, let slip that a third Zombies map would be coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 before the end of 2024.
There are no official details on what this map could look like just yet, but regardless, it’s a powerful weapon for Treyarch to have in its arsenal in the lead-up to Black Ops 6‘s release. The moment fans start to lose interest in Black Ops 6‘s Zombies mode, Treyarch will be able to drop this mysterious third map, hopefully keeping them hooked for just a little while longer.
