The content flow for Halo Infinite‘s live service has slowed down to a drip. 343 Industries hasn’t always released updates on a consistent schedule, and while Halo Infinite does receive new content on a fairly regular basis, most of what gets added nowadays is made by third-party Forge users. 343’s contributions are primarily in the form of purchaseable cosmetics due to the staff’s increasing focus on the next Halo game.
However, Halo Infinite will be breaking this recent trend within the next month. Alongside the 2024 Halo World Championship, many Halo-related announcements have been made. 343 Industries is now changing its name to Halo Studios, and all Halo games going forward will use Unreal Engine. When it comes to the current Halo game, the most notable of these announcements was at a Forge panel where a third-person mode for Halo Infinite was revealed. The mode is confirmed to be releasing later this year, and it could have a major impact on both this game and the Halo series as a whole.

Ahead of the 2024 Halo World Championship, recent leaks suggest that three new weapons may be added to Halo Infinite’s multiplayer soon.
What Halo Infinite’s Third-Person Mode Brings to the Table
Besides animations for turrets, vehicles, and certain abilities in games like Halo 5: Guardians, Halo fans have never had an official way to play one of the mainline games in third-person. For a series so intrinsically tied to the first-person shooter genre, it seemed more likely that Halo Infinite would become playable on PlayStation before it would ever be playable in third-person. Fans are currently divided following Halo Infinite‘s third-person announcement, but this is what can be expected when the mode drops.
Which Halo Infinite Modes Support Third-Person?
The third-person perspective won’t be available across all of Halo Infinite‘s modes — at least not at first. When the update releases, Halo Studios will first add in third-person support for the popular Firefight PvE mode. The developers then plan on bringing third-person to Forge.
Users will not only be able to change camera perspectives for all players when designing a mode, but Forge will also have a functionality that allows modes to switch between third and first-person in the middle of a game depending on a player’s role. For example, a Forge user could create a version of the juggernaut game mode in Halo Infinite that switches a player out of first-person and into third-person whenever they become the juggernaut. Third-person will likely come to PvP modes further in the future, but Halo Studios hasn’t given any word on whether the campaign will see support for this new perspective or not.
Cosmetics and Third-Person Mode
While it’s certainly unexpected that third-person mode is being added to Halo Infinite, it’s more surprising that — in a game supported by charging players for visual cosmetics — Infinite didn’t have more ways for a player to view their Spartan to begin with. With an abundance of armor pieces, armor cores, coatings, and effects, Halo Infinite‘s character customization is more extensive than any other title in the series. Players can, unfortunately, only ever see their forearms and legs most of the time due to the limitations of a first-person perspective. Players will now be able to view their personalized Spartans in all their glory thanks to third-person. The third-person gameplay shown off at the Halo World Championship gives a great idea of what armor and armor effects will look like in this update.
When to Play Third-Person Mode
The addition of third-person mode has proven to be a polarizing topic in the Halo community. Some fans are frustrated with Halo Studios’ decision to prioritize third-person mode’s development over other requested content for Halo Infinite, while others are intrigued by this surprising addition and what it could mean for the series going forward. For those excited about trying out this camera perspective, the wait won’t be too long. Third-person mode will be coming to Firefight this November. It’s currently unknown when support for other gamemodes will arrive.
