Microsoft to lay off 3% of employees

Microsoft is laying off 3% of its employees worldwide.

The cuts will affect employees across all levels, teams, and geographies, according to a report by CNBC.

Microsoft’s LinkedIn page says it has approximately 228,000 employees, which means the move will affect an estimated 6,000+ employees.

The company’s last, smaller round of layoffs came in January 2025.

How this latest round will affect Microsoft’s gaming division is not clear.

“We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC.

One objective of these layoffs is to apparently trim back layers of management. The layoffs are not tied to performance, according to the report.

Microsoft cut 1,900 workers from its gaming operations in 2024, with another round of layoffs in September 2024 affecting 650 employees.

For the three months ending March 31, 2025, Microsoft saw net income reach $25.8 billion, up 18% year-on-year, including 5% growth for its gaming segment.
