HBO has greenlit a Baldur’s Gate TV series, helmed by The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin.
Deadline reports that Mazin will also serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. Former head of story at Wizards of the Coast’s Chris Perkins is also attached to consult on the series.
The adaptation will be a continuation of Baldur’s Gate 3, with new and old characters “dealing with the ramifications of the events in the third game.”
Mazin is reportedly looking to reach out to voice actors of the title to take part in the adaptation, as he did with The Last of Us.
Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios doesn’t seem to be directly involved with the adaptation. However, its founder and CEO Swen Vincke said on social media that Mazin “did reach out to ask if he could come over to the studio to speak with us.”
“The endings of BG3 were created so they could serve as narrative soil for new adventures. There’s plenty of directions they could go. I’m eager to find out which ones Craig and his team will pick,” wrote Vincke.
Larian is currently working on the next installment of its Divinity series.
According to Deadline, the series is “designed to co-exist alongside The Forgotten Realms live-action Dungeon & Dragons series” at Netflix with filmmaker Shawn Levy attached as a producer.
“After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” said Mazin.
“I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
HBO EVP head of drama programming Francesca Orsi added: “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on Baldur’s Gate.
“His deep and long-standing passion for the source material paired with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich, compelling characters promises groundbreaking results.”
This story has been amended to include information regarding Larian’s involvement in the adaptation.
