The following examples have huge monsters and also great character development in the middle of tragedy.
1 Digimon
The Chosen Children Always End Up Fighting Giant Monsters
Digimon Adventure
- Release Date
- March 7, 1999
- Studio
- Toei Animation
- Number of Episodes

Digimon is a shonen anime that became a hit back in the 90s and has been hitting the mark with every season since its first release. A bunch of kids, chosen for unexplained reasons, are isekai’d into a digital world, filled with mysterious (and monstrous) creatures called Digimon.
On more than one occasion, these chosen children, or tamers to be more precise, had to use their own Digimon to fight monstrous beings, such as Apocalymon, Venom Vamdemon, Chimeramon, Ordinemon, Niddhogmon, and others. Some of them are as big as the moon, so, giant monsters: check.

- April 7, 2013
- Studio

Will Eren really fulfill his vow to eradicate all life beyond the Walls of Paradis?
This is a pretty gruesome and unconventional style of warfare that ends up triggering a series of tragic events leading to the unavoidable Rumbling and genocide. A cycle of never-ending death that was finally stopped thanks to the sacrifice of an anti-hero. Or so goes the story. The important thing is there are lots of giant monsters and people fight them for survival.
3 One Punch Man
Saitama Made His Career Fighting These Beasts
One Punch Man
- Release Date
- October 5, 2015
- Studio
- Madhouse, J.C.Staff
- Number of Episodes
- 24
Have you seen a bald with a white cape punching a giant monster into oblivion? One Punch Man is all about the misadventures of a human hero fighting against creatures so unbelievably strong that it ends up looking like a joke. The misunderstood (and overpowered) hero ends up getting more than he bargained for when a young cybernetically enhanced hero adopts him as his master.
This one-sided master-disciple bond becomes the startup for one of the best friendships viewers will ever see in a comedy anime. Plus, if monster fans want to see a small and cranky girl with incredible telekinetic powers turning Godzilla into a puddle of blood, then this is definitely for them.
4 Kaiju Nº 8

Kaiju No. 8 (2024)
- Release Date
- April 13, 2024
- Studio

For those anime fans who like hardcore bloody battles and giant monsters, Kaiju Nº8 is one of the best dishes on the menu. It includes an assortment of quirky folks in the cast, including a satirical but kickass protagonist, and some great character development.

Kaiju No. 8 has quite a lot of Kaiju in it, which may seem obvious. But, of all the ones that have appeared, which monster reigns supreme?
This series is still young, and the manga has not progressed too much lately, but still, it has the potential to become one of the best Kaiju series in the genre. Besides, it has some of the best battle scenes fans will see in this category of anime.
5 Neon Genesis Evangelion
Get Into That Eva And Fight Monsters!
Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Release Date
- October 4, 1995
- Studio
- Gainax, Tatsunoko Production
- Number of Episodes
- 26
If there is an iconic giant monster anime, it is Neon Genesis Evangelion: a boy-meets-girl/coming-of-age story with a dark twist. The girl is his dead mom’s clone, and the coming-of-age is more of an existential crisis that ends up with the end of the world. What a blast!
But if fans love to see enormous Kaiju (Angels) being beaten to a pulp by Mechas (EVAs) then they came to the right place. Just remember that this anime has certain sensitive topics, and has a massive amount of adult content. So, discretion is advised for younger audiences.
