Eidos-Montréal, developer of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has announced a workforce reduction impacting 124 employees. Studio head David Anfossi has also left the Embracer-owned company.
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, Eidos-Montréal said the decision was due to “changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams.”
“Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos-Montréal can be most effective,” it wrote.
“We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward.”
Addressing Anfossi’s departure, the developer added: “We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavours. A transition plan is underway, and further updates will be shared as new leadership is finalised.”
Anfossi had been at the studio for 19 years, starting in 2007 as a producer. He previously worked at Ubisoft Montréal, also in a producer role.
This marks the second round of layoffs at Eidos-Montréal in recent months. The studio implemented cuts in December, and employees reported that most projects had been cancelled.
The current focus is reportedly on co-development, including Microsoft’s Grounded 2 and Fable. The studio’s last developed and released title was Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021.
In March, 75 employees were laid off, and 97 positions were made redundant in January 2024.
Eidos-Montréal was acquired by the Embracer Group in 2022 along with Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix Montréal for $300 million.
A year later, the company initiated a restructuring program after a $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group did not materialize. This led to thousands of layoffs, project cancellations, and the closure of several studios.
