Key Takeaways
- Ghost of Yotei sets the stage for innovation over a direct sequel like Ghost of Tsushima 2.
- Implementing Red Dead Redemption 2’s horse-taming could enhance Ghost of Yotei’s gaming experience.
- Allowing players to tame wild horses in Ghost of Yotei would deepen the bond between players and their mounts.
Ghost of Yotei may not be the Ghost of Tsushima 2 fans likely thought they might get, but that means the door is wide open for it to innovate on its predecessor in ways it might not have been able to otherwise. Ghost of Yotei takes players to the land of Ezo surrounding Mount Yotei, in the heart of what is known today as Hokkaido, for a brand-new origin story.
Ghost of Yotei already appears to have a lot in common with Red Dead Redemption 2, just as its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, did. Unlike Ghost of Tsushima, however, Ghost of Yotei seems to be leaning even more into the Western feel of traditional samurai stories, with its protagonist, Atsu, even being somewhat of an outlaw like Red Dead Redemption 2‘s Arthur Morgan. In light of those comparisons, Ghost of Yotei might as well dive even deeper into Red Dead Redemption 2 and “steal” one of its best features.

Ghost of Yotei Makes Atsu Twice as Powerful as Jin With Highly Requested Feature
Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai was certainly a powerful samurai, but Ghost of Yotei has a leg up on him by having one highly requested feature.
Ghost of Yotei Should Implement Red Dead 2’s Horse Taming
Red Dead Redemption 2 Allows Players to Tame Wild Horses
Red Dead Redemption 2 has many standout characteristics, from its hyperrealism to its emotional story. However, while exploring the wilds of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s world, one thing players can do is tame the wild horses that they find, and it’s actually fairly easy to do as long as players are patient.
One of the reasons Red Dead Redemption 2‘s horse-taming feature is so worthwhile is that it allows players to personally choose from a wide range of horses rather than merely having a horse handed to them. It also enhances the personal bond players share with their horses, as they are required to put more effort into obtaining one than simply purchasing one requires. Furthermore, Red Dead Redemption 2‘s mount mechanics mean some horses are better than others, which inevitably leads players to look for the best horse in the game and attempt to tame it.
For example,
Red Dead Redemption 2
‘s White Arabian horse is the best horse in the game for its stats, and it is also arguably one of the best looking.
Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t the first game to allow players to tame wild horses, but it is the one with which Ghost of Yotei shares the most similarities. Western cinema and gaming are already hugely inspired by the samurai, so perhaps Ghost of Yotei should now flip the tables on Red Dead Redemption 2 and implement one of its best features for players to enjoy. It would not only provide players with a gameplay element different from Ghost of Tsushima, but it would also enhance that feature by a mile.
Ghost of Yotei Could Enhance Its Mounts by Allowing Players to Tame Wild Horses
In the announcement trailer for Ghost of Yotei, Atsu can be seen riding her own horse through a herd of wild horses, suggesting a feature similar to Red Dead Redemption 2‘s horse-taming would fit right in with the game’s world. The greatest challenge to overcome would be somehow implementing a convincing horse-taming mini-game, but it could be done.
One of the reasons
Red Dead Redemption 2
‘s horse-taming feature is so worthwhile is that it allows players to personally choose from a wide range of horses rather than merely having a horse handed to them.
Another reason such a feature would be great for Ghost of Yotei is that, while it was somewhat easy to bond with Jin’s horse in Ghost of Tsushima, it was mostly vicarious through Jin. If players were able to tame a wild horse in Ghost of Yotei and then build a bond with it over time, the mount might mean even more to players than Jin’s horse did in Ghost of Tsushima. Hopefully, this is all something Sucker Punch has considered for Ghost of Yotei‘s gameplay because it feels like it could work really well.
The sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 exclusive scheduled to drop at some point in 2025. Taking place in 1603, the story will feature a new protagonist and a new Japanese region that is far removed from Tsushima’s setting.
