MultiVersus, the 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, will shortly go offline for good.

Player First Games announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will be its last back in January, confirming the brawler would close down permanently at 5pm PDT (12 noon EDT), on May 30, 2025. It was reportedly seen as a major failure for Warner Bros. Discovery; in a financial call from November 2024, the company admitted MultiVersus performed far worse than expected, resulting in a $100 million writedown for its games business. That brought the total loss of the business to $300 million after the disappointing launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January.

Just a month after this announcement, Warner Bros. announced it was canceling its planned Wonder Woman game and shutting down three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and MultiVersus developer Player First Games.

In a thread called “Tomorrow Multiversus shuts down, what are the final things you have to sat about the game,” hundreds of players left a comment, celebrating their favorite moments.

“Multiversus was a dream. It was a platform fighter which focused on a quick offensive and 2v2 play that supported team synergy,” wrote one player. “Even outside of its idea, the casting was great. A lot of the characters’ VAs reprising their roles (like the late Kevin Conroy reprising his role as Batman, Matthew Lilard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, Eric Bauza as Bugs and Marvin, etc) and interactions between characters during and after a match.

“While some roster choices and move decisions were perplexing (like Banana Guard and Shaggy being based on Ultra Instinct Shaggy), I can’t deny that a vast majority of movesets were inspired. There will never be a game quite like Multiversus.”

“Nothing will beat that feeling playing the beta back in 22. I was absolutely hooked on the fast paced nature of the game,” replied another. “I remember I got sick and all I played was this game. I will miss it and hopefully it gets revived in the future with a sequel or something.”

“This game will always hold a special place in my heart. Right next to PlayStation All-Stars,” lamented someone else, while another said: “Tom and Jerry was one of the most unique and fun fighters in my life and brought my love back to fighting games.”

Others are trying to be a little more optimistic, but the majority of players accept its gone, not least because of “how much of an IP nightmare it would be to bring it back.” That said, some are even trying to preserve it once the servers go dark.

“MultiVersus may not be a must-play at social gatherings, but its refreshing team-based battles make it a great platform fighter online,” we wrote in IGN’s MultiVersus review, giving it an 8.
