The Nintendo Switch 2 picked up the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award (METI) at this year’s Japan Game Awards.
The award show, run by the Japanese Computer Entertainment Suppliers’ Association (CESA), took place on September 23, 2025, in Tokyo, ahead of the Tokyo Game Show’s start on September 25, 2025.
According to the events’ website, the METI award is given to “those who have contributed to the development of the videogame industry through creation of excellent products or expanded the scope of the videogame industry using a new expression, technology, etc.”
This year’s award was given to the Switch 2 “in recognition of its contribution to the development of the Japanese console game industry.”
Metaphor: ReFantazio also won big, scooping up the show’s Grand Award (the show’s highest game honour).
Atlus and Sega’s JRPG beat out 10 other games for the top award, including Elden Ring Nightreign, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, which each won Awards for Excellence.
Other awards were given to Odd Meter’s third-person adventure Indika, which won the Game Designers Awards, and Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, which picked up the Movement Award.
Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which sold one million copies in just three days, received the Breakthrough Award, while a Special Award was given to Sony’s PlayStation Store.
