Valnet has cut several members of TheGamer’s editorial team, including the “entire TheGamer features team alongside several other staff members.”
While it’s unclear how many staff have been impacted by the layoffs, and TheGamer’s staff page has not been updated since at least July 2025 despite at least two known rounds of cuts, several former staff have announced the layoffs on social media, including its news editor Rhiannon Bevan and features lead Jade King.
The cuts come just months after the game and pop culture website Polygon was acquired by Valnet earlier this year. On the same day Valnet announced the acquisition, numerous long-time staff members revealed they’d either been laid off or had chosen to leave as part of the sale.
Valnet was founded in 2012 and now operates a portfolio of more than 27 brands across entertainment, technology, automotive, gaming, aviation, lifestyle, travel, and sports. It claims to reach over 300 million monthly visitors and 5 billion sessions per year.
According to data from Press Engine provided to VGC, more than 1200 video game journalists have left media in the past two years and haven’t returned to the industry.
