2K has launched Small Axe Studios, an AAA development team based in Vancouver, Canada.
Under Aaron McHardy’s leadership, the studio is developing 2K’s next sports franchise and recruiting for key positions.
McHardy serves as head of studio, vice president, and executive producer.
The leadership team includes Gary Paterson (head of design), Tom Pan (head of operations), Mike Thompson (head of engineering), Brent Breedveld (animation director), Karl Gryc (art director), John Cruz (technical art director), and Trisha MacWan (head of HR).
McHardy previously led the EA Sports FIFA team for 15 years, until 2021. Other EA veterans on the leadership team are Paterson, Pan, Thompson, and Cruz.
Small Axe originated from 2K Sports Lab, established in 2023, which focused on research and development for future sports interactive entertainment games.
“The studio combines the passion of a startup with the scale of 2K to redefine the future of sports video games,” said 2K.
“By leveraging our proven expertise with AAA franchises like NBA 2K, WWE 2K and PGA Tour 2K, Small Axe Studios has the ultimate foundation and long-term commitment to do just that.”
McHardy added: “This studio exists to take on the industry’s boldest challenges, and our name reflects that: with vision, hunger, and focus, a small axe can take down a big tree.”
“I couldn’t be prouder of the team we’ve already assembled – or more excited for what’s ahead.”
