Roblox is introducing two new age-based accounts for minors: Roblox Kids for children aged five to eight, and Roblox Select for users aged nine-15. New parental controls are also on the way.

The company said the two new accounts, set to launch in June, will “more closely align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with a user’s age.” They will bring “age-checks, account-level defaults, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and expanded parental controls together into a unified framework for younger users,” while ensuring “the vast majority” of their favorite games will be available.

The details of what’s available to each age-based account is summarised below:

Roblox is also establishing an “ongoing selection process for games available to users under 16.”

“As always, all content uploaded to Roblox goes through our existing moderation systems, including AI asset scanning, ongoing user report review, and multimodal moderation that evaluates scenes in real time for potential policy violations,” the company said.

“For content made available to users under 16, we will apply an additional continuous process that dynamically selects games. This process will include developer verification, extended content evaluation and rating, and additional limits on content more suited to older audiences.”

Age-checked users 16 and older will not see any change to their Roblox experience, and minor accounts will automatically transition at the appropriate ages. Those who have not completed an age-check will “automatically move into the appropriate age-based account.”

Moving onto the new parental controls, these new settings permit parents to better control content ratings, communications settings, screen-time, and spending limits, as well as obtain “transparent” information on what games their children are playing, and who they play with.

Parents will also be able to:

  • Extending granular game blocking: Parents can block specific individual games through age 15.
  • Extending chat management: Parents can manage direct chat settings through age 15.
  • New granular game approval: Parents can now approve access to specific games that are not otherwise available under the child’s default account type.

“This structure is designed to give parents more precise control over the games and friends their child interacts with,” Roblox explained. “Together, these updates are part of our ongoing work to build age-appropriate experiences for all users, apply safety-by-default protections for younger users, and give parents more visibility and control over how their children use Roblox.

“As part of our work to become the world’s healthiest platform for users of all ages, we continually invest in safety by design and empower creativity through technology innovation. Our products are thoughtfully designed to cultivate creation, connection, and collaborative play, rather than passive consumption. When it comes to safety, we do the right thing, including proactive filtering, age-checks, parental controls, and providing clear content ratings, because the well-being of our community is our highest priority.”

Last month, Roblox “strongly disputed” claims it was failing children after officials in Los Angeles filed a lawsuit against the online platform Roblox for allegedly “failing to protect children from predatory behavior.” It follows similar action from the Australian government, which similarly demanded Roblox respond to concerns “regarding the exploitation of children on the Roblox service.”

Earlier today, Roblox unveiled plans for a new monthly subscription service, Roblox Plus.
