Atari has partnered with Twin Galaxies to launch the Atari World Championships.
The competition starts with an open online tournament featuring five Atari titles and concludes with a live in-person Grand Finals.
Twin Galaxies, a platform for video game records and competitive gaming, will use its Submission and Adjudication Process (TGSAP) to manage the online tournament.
Twin Galaxies will also recruit select brand partners for the North America pilot of the competition.
“Atari has a rich, fifty-plus-year history that fans continue to celebrate and explore,” said Atari CEO Wade Rosen.
“We are looking forward to working with Twin Galaxies to celebrate competition with our existing fans and bring new fans into our growing community.”
Twin Galaxies senior executive Zachary Rozga added: “Atari and Twin Galaxies are bringing the original, retro spirit and arcade energy of competitive gaming back.
“The World Championships model we have co-created builds a modern stage where gamers of every type can earn their place on the leaderboard, get recognised for their achievement and tell their story.”
Last week, Atari signed a deal with Universal Pictures to adapt ten of its IPs into feature films.
These include: Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, and Yars’ Revenge.
