BioWare confirms next Mass Effect game is still in development, “remains committed” to franchise

BioWare has reiterated that the next Mass Effect game is still in development, and that it and parent company Electronic Arts “remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.”

Writing on the BioWare blog, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble provided updates on the franchise noting that the team “is currently heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect.”

“We have a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out,” he wrote.

“We’re excited by what we’re building, and we promise you: when we’re ready, it’ll be a lot of fun to show.”

Earlier this year, BioWare “reimagined” how it worked as a studio, resulting in an unspecified number of layoffs.

The developer said the team behind the next Mass Effect title didn’t “require support from the full studio.”

“We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit,” said BioWare general manager Gary McKay.

Moving back to Gamble’s update, he also provided details on Amazon’s Mass Effect TV adaptation, which was greenlit in 2024.

“The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game,” he explained.

“The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story.”

The show’s team includes Star Trek Beyond writer Doug Jung as showrunner, alongside Fast and Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey. Gamble will also serve as an executive producer on the production.

These Mass Effect updates come after BioWare’s parent company EA announced it would be acquired for $55 billion in September.

It has entered an agreement led by an investment consortium comprised of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners.
