Brandon Sanderson Says He ‘Would Love to’ Create Tabletop Adaptations of His Cytoverse Books

Brandon Sanderson has been heavily invested in making tabletop adaptations of his Cosmere books. Most recently, he’s been collaborating with Brotherwise Games on standalone board games as well as a larger Cosmere TTRPG. It’s unsurprising, then, that his interest in such adaptations expands beyond his most popular literary universe.

IGN recently had the chance to interview Sanderson, and we asked him if he’s considered making tabletop adaptations of Skyward and the rest of the Cytoverse.

“I would love to! We’ve talked about it. However, I also want to be aware of asking my fans for too much,” Sanderson told IGN. “There are a lot of great books out there, and a lot of great games. I don’t want or need it to be all Brandon Sanderson all the time. We try to be very deliberate and careful about these kinds of collaborations, to only be doing what will feel the most exciting to my fans.”

Sanderson’s answer here doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Cytoverse tabletop adaptation, but it certainly indicates that it won’t be happening any time soon. The release of Blightfall marks the first official book expansion into the Cytoverse, and it was recently revealed that a Skyward TV series is in the works.

While Sanderson’s YA sci-fi series isn’t nearly as popular as The Cosmere, it definitely has potential to grow in the future. If the Skyward TV series is able to find success on streaming, it seems inevitable that some sort of tabletop collab would follow. That being said, we’re still looking at a long wait before that TV adaptation actually happens. The Mistborn movie, for example, is looking at a release date of 2031 or later, and that’s further along than the Skyward series.

Despite no future plans for tabletop adaptations for the Cytoverse, Sanderson still has some exciting upcoming projects in the works with Brotherwise. The Cosmere RPG is officially getting its Mistborn expansion in November, and a massive War for Roshar strategy game is also in the works. If you’re a fan of Sanderson’s books and tabletop games, there’s a lot of great stuff coming your way.
