This is an IGN opinion piece from Ryan McCaffrey, who worked at Official Xbox Magazine from 2002-2012 during the original Xbox and Xbox 360 era before joining IGN, where he remains “the Xbox guy.” In the run-up to Xbox’s 25th anniversary, he’ll be sharing his memories from the platform’s first quarter-century.

Everyone remembers the Xbox 360’s launch window juggernauts: Call of Duty 2 on day one, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter a few months in, and the big one, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. They are all phenomenal games that set the Xbox 360 off on the right foot, for sure. Even better for Xbox, since there wouldn’t be a PlayStation 3 for almost an entire year, every new game released during the first few months of the then-groundbreaking “HD Era” effectively became a timed Xbox exclusive. If you wanted the most mind-blowing visuals, the 360 was the place to be.

But there’s one game among that launch window library that hit just as hard as any of the others (yes, pun intended) that doesn’t get talked about enough: Fight Night Round 3. I was working at Official Xbox Magazine when the 360 launched, and I vividly remember the day the playable demo for FNR3 dropped on Xbox Live Marketplace. It was January 5, 2006, and I fired it up at my desk. I was no boxing fan, but at that exact moment of time the entire OXM crew – and indeed gamers everywhere – were desperate for any and every new game we could play on our brand-new 720p-capable next-gen console.

What I saw on the screen that day made my jaw drop. Fight Night Round 3 was not merely a glossy port of the PS2 and original-Xbox versions of the same game in the way that Gun and Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland were (side note: those were such egregious examples of being “File → Save As” ports of the old-gen versions despite costing $10 more on the 360 that I came up with a term for it: Hawkware). No, Fight Night Round 3 took full advantage of the Xbox 360’s horsepower. Perhaps the greatest example of its “next-gen-ness” was how developer EA Chicago replaced the traditional HUD with in-universe indicators of your character’s status – you had to gauge the health of each fighter by the blood and sweat on their bodies, along with their labored breathing. The intricate detail unlocked by the 360’s power created an insanely immersive boxing sim. This was only bolstered by the fact that FNR3 included a ton of real-world fighters as well as commentary by pro boxing play-by-play man Joe Tessitore.

You had to gauge the health of each fighter by the blood and sweat on their bodies.“

Sometimes a game’s graphics are so good that they draw you into its mechanics even if you’re not a fan of the genre or subject matter, and that’s exactly what happened with Fight Night Round 3. I’m convinced that the Xbox 360 version of that game – and the PS3 version that dropped nine months later – turned a lot of gamers into boxing fans. Or at the very least, turned them into boxing game fans.

While the visuals were undoubtedly Fight Night’s most impressive achievement, it’s worth shouting out the sound design. I’m reminded of a story told by Round 3’s lead designer, Kudo Tsunoda (yes, the same Kudo Tsunoda that would go on to become the “You ever wonder what the bottom of an [Xbox] Avatar’s shoe looks like? Bam, there it is!” guy during his stage demo of the Kinect). You may remember the slow-motion “Impact Punches” you could trigger that had the potential to turn the tide of a fight or even end it in your favor. The sound effect of glove-smashing-face-in-slow-mo was created, as Tsunoda tells it, by an EA Chicago intern repeatedly whaling away on an oiled-up pig carcass at their development studio. Do I believe it? Maybe. Is it a heck of a story either way? Definitely.

Fight Night Round 3 was a heck of a game. I’ll forever remember it as an incredible display of the visual leap the Xbox 360 was capable of beyond what the original Xbox could deliver. I went on to play a decent bit of Fight Night Round 4, although admittedly never really spent much time with Champion. And then the series disappeared, eventually replaced by the far-more-popular sport of the modern day: UFC. I still miss Fight Night, though, even if the days of it dropping our jaws with its knockout (sorry) graphics are probably gone for good.

Ryan McCaffrey is IGN’s executive editor of previews and host of IGN’s weekly Xbox show, Podcast Unlocked, and a co-host of Next-Gen Console Watch. He’s a North Jersey guy, so it’s “Taylor ham,” not “pork roll.” Debate it with him on Twitter at @DMC_Ryan.
