GTA 6 Codes for Physical Editions Will Expire 170 Days After Launch in Japan

If you’re buying ‘physical’ copies of GTA 6 in Japan, you’d better act fast and download that code lickety-split, else it might expire while you’re not looking.

Rockstar already ruffled some feathers after revealing that ‘physical’ copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 would be that in name only. You get a cool box, but a disc won’t be inside it; instead, you’ll get a digital download code, which, in some regions, will expire after a certain period of time has passed.

As spotted by Power Unlimited columnist ‘Genki,’ Rockstar’s official website states that physical editions of the game will expire in Japan 170 days after launch on November 19th, 2026, due to “regional regulations.”

While there was some initial confusion as to whether or not this only applied to separate codes for DLC content, it has since been confirmed that yes, the actual GTA 6 product code will expire if not claimed after 170 days within Japan.

Genki cited Japan’s Payment Services Act as the reason for this. It’s a strict law that aims to protect consumers from getting scammed, requiring sellers of digital codes to set aside large amounts of money in the event their companies go under or disappear from the market completely.

To no one’s surprise, most corporations don’t want to hand the Japanese Government tons of cash for indefinite safekeeping. Lucky for them, there’s a way to circumvent this; if the product expires in less than six months, the rule doesn’t apply, which is why these GTA 6 codes have an expiration date of 170 days.

Regardless of the intended financial protections, folks online aren’t too happy with this news, with one theorizing on X, “Guess they’ll need to refresh stock pretty regularly to avoid people buying an out-of-date code.”

“Yes, that or they don’t do anymore shipments after it is sold out,” Genki replied.

Rockstar’s decision to push codes in lieu of a fully physical disc for GTA 6 was hot on the heels of Sony’s announcement that it will stop printing game discs as of January 2028, sparking a heated debate around digital ownership that hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

In fact, nearly all of PlayStation’s recent social media posts have been inundated with angry comments from players protesting the platform’s controversial business move, with the latest trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film getting flooded with jokes that the central character isn’t transporting an organ, but rather “the last physical game copy in existence.”

Players can’t help but fear that this signals a transition that will echo through the rest of the industry, leading to an all-digital future where games, movies, and more can be pulled at-will, despite consumers having paid for them.

Protesters are even suggesting a full PlayStation blackout, urging players not to use Sony’s services from August 23 – 30 as a way of showing the company they mean business. Whether or not it’ll actually happen, or prove effective, remains to be seen.
