Meta is conducting further cuts as it continues to move resources to AI-related investments.
A memo obtained by Bloomberg states that 8,000 employees, or 10% of Meta’s workforce, will be impacted. The affected divisions have not been disclosed.
A spokesperson confirmed the cuts to BBC News but declined to comment further.
Staff were informed on April 23. Affected employees will receive official notification next month. Meta will also close 6,000 open job postings.
“Normally, we would want to nail down more details before communicating about this broadly, but since it leaked, I want to share what I can right now,” wrote Meta chief people officer Janelle Gale.
“I know this is unwelcome news, and confirming this puts everyone in an uneasy state, but we feel this is the best path forward, given the circumstances.”
Gale continued: “We’re doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we’re making. This is not an easy tradeoff, and it will mean letting go of people who have made meaningful contributions to Meta during their time here.
This round of layoffs follows reported cuts in March that affected 700 positions across multiple divisions, including the Reality Labs VR unit.
Earlier this year, Meta reduced its Reality Labs workforce by 10%, resulting in the closure of three VR studios.
