Unity 7 to launch in Q1 2027; new engine is a “direct continuation” of Unity 6

Unity 7 will enter beta testing in December 2026, with its full release scheduled for Q1 2027.

Unity announced at the Unite Seoul conference that its latest engine will eliminate the need for traditional version upgrades.

Unity 7 is “a direct continuation of the Unity 6 architecture,” with new features “shipped and production-verified” in the current engine.

“Because the architecture underneath doesn’t change at the moment of version transition, teams can adopt with ease, with the workflows they depend on remaining fully supported,” Unity’s senior vice president of product Adam Smith told Game Developer.

The latest engine introduces a new CLI and public API, allowing artists, producers, and developers to validate assets and collaborate using their preferred tools without full access to Unity’s editor. It also offers a free MCP for connecting with AI coding agents.

Unity 7 is built on a modern CoreCLR foundation and utilizes new rendering tools, including real-time global illumination with Surface Cache GI.

Unity said this will “bring richer, more realistic lighting and visual detail to every platform, powered in part by AI-assisted graphics optimisation and scaling from high-end PCs down to mobile devices.”

The engine maker’s latest suite of AI tools is a core component of Unity 7, though Smith emphasised that developers are not required to use them.

“If your studio has committed to keeping AI out of your creative work – you’re not on the sidelines of this release,” he clarified.

“Unity 7 is built for a future where humans and coding agents can work together. But the choice is always the team’s, not the platform’s.”

Unity also announced that its latest engine features direct-to-consumer IAP, no-code web shops, and unified catalogues that provide purchase data to the AI engine, Unity Vector.

“Game development is changing faster than at any point in history,” said Unity CEO and president Matt Bromberg.

“The future belongs not to the biggest team, but to those who can use new technology to create something unique and find an audience. Unity 7 is the platform that meets this moment.”
