Xbox opened its summer showcase with the news that Gears of War E-day will not, after all, be releasing on PlayStation 5, and neither will inXile’s Clockwork Revolution.
The titles will be exclusive to the Xbox platform and “not timed exclusives”, the company confirmed, and CCO Matt Booty said that exclusivity for future titles would be decided on a “case by case basis”.
The company’s showcase included the reveal of new Hellblade title Senua and an update on State of Decay 3, confirming that both would also be available on PS5 when they release in 2027.
The recently-delayed Fable will also arrive on PS5 when it launches on February 27, and Booty confirmed in an interview with Gamertag Radio that live service games will continue to be fully multiplatform, and previously announced ports – like the upcoming remake of Halo: Campaign Evolved – would be honoured.
Of future releases, he said that “our principle is when we announce a date, we want to announce the platforms,” and Xbox exclusivity would be decided “case by case”.
“We want people to have a reason to get on board with Xbox,” he said. “We want them to have a reason to buy an Xbox, a reason to be an Xbox fan. At the same time we want to reward all our players that have been with us for a long time. We know that exclusives are important.”
The news follows CEO Asha Sharma telling Bloomberg that the Xbox platform “must offer exclusive content and services” in order to be successful.
