Hopes of an Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem remaster have been raised by an intriguing comment from Nightdive Studios.
The talented team at Nightdive are port and remaster specialists who have previously dusted off dozens of classic video games for re-release. These include various titles in the System Shock, Quake, Doom and Turok franchises, plus Heretic + Hexen and Thief: The Dark Project.
Now owned by Atari, Nightdive has found an audience with its enhanced ports, which typically receive a lick of visual paint while remaining true to their original forms. And, of course, Nightdive does this in collaboration with the games’ original development studio where possible.
Could long-lost classic Eternal Darkness be next? Responding to a fan request via social media yesterday on the 25th anniversary of the GameCube, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick had this to say: “Eternal Darkness is one of my all-time favorites and it deserves the treatment I know Nightdive Studios is capable of,” Kick wrote. “Keep your eye on our Deep Dives…”
Here, Kick is referring to the studio’s lengthy videos it releases via YouTube, discussing the various projects it has taken on. Surely this is a suggestion that Eternal Darkness will be next?
Perhaps, though, it’s worth remaining cautious until anything is officially announced. Nightdive has attempted to work on Nintendo-published games before, but has never quite got close enough. In 2022, Kick commented that the Mario maker “always get[s] gun shy working with third-party developers,” despite discussions to work on an array of its games. One of these was a remaster of the N64 classic Goldeneye 007 that Nintendo ultimately decided against — only to drop the original on Nintendo Switch Online instead. Still, Kick has long maintained that Eternal Darkness is his favorite Nintendo game he’d like Nightdive to work on.
Developed by Silicon Knights, the survival horror adventure launched for the GameCube back in 2002 and became a cult classic for Nintendo fans who were impressed (and suitably freaked out) by the game’s creepy sanity mechanics, which Nintendo itself locked down with a patent.
Eternal Darkness sees players controlling an array of characters throughout history, each of which can descend into madness if you’re not careful. The psychological effects of this are then experienced by the player, from subtle noises and skewed camera angles, to visual effects such as bleeding walls or moving statues. At its most extreme, the game begins breaking the fourth wall, appearing to reset progress or mute players’ TVs. It’s enough to make you want to go mad on purpose, just to see how wacky the game gets.
But despite strong reviews, Eternal Darkness sold relatively poorly. Plans for a sequel were discussed for years, though various issues within Silicon Knights hampered progress, and a later push for a spiritual successor via a crowdfunding campaign also fell by the wayside. Silicon Knights ultimately shut down in 2014, while Nintendo’s patent for the game’s sanity system is now believed to have lapsed.
Is it finally time to descend into madness once more? Here’s hoping.
