Analyst data: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey experiences surge in daily active users following Christopher Nolan film
SHARE

Following the release of Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey film on July 17, daily active users of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey increased significantly across all platforms.

Despite limited promotion from Ubisoft, aside from a few social media posts connecting the game and film, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey experienced a 90% increase in engagement across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, according to Aliena Analytics.

Daily active users increased from 122,000 on the film’s opening day to 233,000 within ten days, approximately 1.8 times higher than pre-premiere levels.

Most players were on Xbox, where daily active users increased 134% from 36,000 to 84,000. PlayStation nearly doubled to 114,000, and Steam grew by 26%.

Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Aliena Analytics, attributed the console spikes to subscription services, as the game is available on both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.

Video Game Insights (VGI) data supports these findings, with combined daily active users rising from over 150,000 on Odyssey’s premiere date to 238,000 by July 26.

VGI also recorded a spike in DAUs, from over 150,000 to 238,000

“Software sales moved modestly at around 400,000 copies year-to-date, but the real here is pure player engagement,” said Elliot.

“The film didn’t make millions buy an eight-year-old game, but it got a massive cohort playing it again. That data gives Ubisoft great ammunition for an eventual AC Odyssey Resynced.”

Similar increases in daily active users have followed television adaptations of popular game franchises. After the premiere of Prime’s first Fallout series, DAUs for Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 rose by 225% in the subsequent weeks.

Fallout game sales also increased after the show’s second season premiere, with VGI recording “significant spikes” for Fallout: New Vegas and notable growth for Fallout 4.

The number of concurrent players on Steam doubled after the series premiere, increasing from an average of 20,000 to over 40,000.
