A new report suggests that Halo: Campaign Evolved had a fairly troubled development.

According to Rebs Gaming, a popular Halo insider whose reporting journalists have corroborated in the past, the recent Halo remake underwent major changes during its development. Halo Studios works with a bevy of external teams and contractors, something that may have led to issues during Campaign Evolved’s development. A studio known as Abstraction was recruited around 2023 to help modify the original game’s work and make it compatible with a new engine and new features.

Halo Studios opted to utilize Unreal Engine 5, which created issues since the original game was designed on a rather ancient engine known as Blam. Abstraction worked to gel the two together and make it so new elements like sprinting, four-player co-op, and more all felt organic in Campaign Evolved. The original levels and combat encounters weren’t designed for these things, so not accounting for them could have created all kinds of issues.

Unfortunately, Rebs Gaming reportedly discovered that Abstraction was prematurely kicked off the remake after Halo Studios imposed unrealistic deadlines and expectations on a technically complex project. The studio wasn’t credited in the game’s credits, but individual staff members were given special thanks. A source told Rebs Gaming that Abstraction’s work was thrown out and redone quickly, which is believed to have caused bugs and AI problems.

The insider went on to claim that the studio’s hubris led to further setbacks down the line. It was believed that the pivot to Unreal Engine 5 would have made things easier, but that wasn’t the case. The team was led to believe by leadership that they could port assets into Unreal; instead, 100% of those assets had to reportedly be rebuilt in the engine, which the team didn’t account for.

Rebs Gaming went on to allege that overall mismanagement created multiple obstacles for the team and even led to the cancellation of a multiplayer Halo project, as the Campaign Evolved team needed its staff and resources. In the final year of the game’s development, the team had to crunch in order to get it out on time.

Additionally, the game was planned to utilize real-time cutscenes, which would’ve allowed players to see their custom armor and weapons. This unfortunately had to be scrapped, as the external team working on the game’s cinematics “struggled” and barely made it in time for release.

Ultimately, Halo: Campaign Evolved is being received fairly well, but it has also left some fans feeling like there was more to be desired with its various issues. It’s unclear how the game is selling yet, but we’ll likely know within the next few weeks as sales data comes out. The team did tease a Halo 2 remake at the end of this one, so perhaps there is more to come. We can only hope it’s not as messy as this game’s development, though.
