Mafia: The Old Country is getting a surprise story expansion this August. The first trailer for Mafia: The Old Country’s DLC, Man of Honor, confirmed that Don Salieri will return in this story expansion. The charcater was prominently featured as the antagonist in the original Mafia game. The new expansion will only cost $10 and will release on August 14th, adding two new story chapters that take place in the middle of the main game’s story and additional Free Ride content.

The new missions take place in winter 1905 and sees Enzo assisting Ennio Salieri following his release from prison. The expansion will feature new weapons, vehicles, and environments for players to participate in.

In an interview with Polygon, associate design director Josh Zammit explained the decision to revisit the character of Salieri, long before he becomes the kingpin we know him as in the original Mafia.

“We dive into some of the stories about what [Salieri] was doing beforehand, stuff that players of the previous games won’t know,” Zammit told Polygon. “Ultimately, his goal to get to America is his driving factor at this point. And maybe that plays into the later story, right? Plants a little bit of a seed in Enzo’s head about what he might want to do with his future. That was an interesting thing for us to play with as well — this idea that where did he get this idea of going to the new life? Maybe there was somebody there that was driving it home and sort of eventually it stuck with Enzo as an opportunity as well.”

The news was a bit of a surprise, as Mafia: The Old Country was designed as a smaller-scale title. It was released last year as a $50 title and isn’t a big AAA open-world game that takes dozens of hours to complete. However, the game was a sizable hit, prompting Hanger 13 to keep supporting it.

We gave the game an 8/10 in our review, praising it for being a “conventional but effective return to the linear and tightly story-driven format of the original Mafia and Mafia II, and it boasts a wonderful eye and ear for detail.”
