PlayStation first-party game sales increased from 28.9 million to 32.1 million copies in FY2025, marking a modest improvement over the past five years.
This growth coincided with the release of Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch Productions, launched five years after its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.
Data collated by Game File of Sony’s annual financial results shows the recent increase follows a sharp decline in first-party sales since the peak between Spring 2020 and Winter 2021.
Sony’s first-party figures include games published on PS4 and PS5, along with select titles from external studios such as Arrowhead Game Studios and Team Ninja.
During this period, Sony sold 58.4 million first-party copies, coinciding with the PlayStation 5 launch and releases like The Last of Us Part 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Demon’s Souls.
This sales peak occurred during global COVID-19 lockdowns. Four years later, despite releases such as Astro Bot and the short-lived Concord, Sony sold less than half its peak volume.
Sales declined to 28.9 million in FY2024 before the recent rebound. Game File attributed the decline to inconsistent studio output and lengthy AAA development cycles.
Earlier this year, Sony shuttered first-party developer Dark Outlaw Games as part of “several strategic adjustments to support long-term sustainability.”
Sony also closed Bluepoint Games, a remaster studio known for co-developing God of War Ragnarok and reissuing Demon’s Souls, Shadow of the Colossus, and Uncharted.
Sony is reportedly scaling back on releasing PS5 exclusives for PC.
Sources told Bloomberg that such ports “risk damaging the console’s brand and could hurt sales of the PS5 and its successors.”
