VR developer Vertigo Games has announced the closure of its Amsterdam studio.
CEO Richard Stitselaar attributed the studio’s closure to the challenges facing the VR industry.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly, and I want to acknowledge the impact it has on everyone at Vertigo Studios Amsterdam,” said Stitselaar.
“Their creativity, dedication, and hard work have been invaluable, and our focus right now is supporting the team through this process. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Vertigo Studios Amsterdam over the years.”
GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Vertigo Games to clarify the status of its Rotterdam studio, as well as its offices in the Netherlands and Los Angeles.
Vertigo Games was originally established as Force Field Entertainment in 2015, which was acquired by Vertigo Games in 2021.
The developer was acquired by Koch Media, a subsidiary of the Embracer Group, in 2020 for €50 million. Koch Media rebranded as Plaion in 2022.
Vertigo Games’ recent titles include Metro Awakening, The 7th Guest Remake, and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow.
The closure of Vertigo Games Amsterdam illustrates a wider pattern affecting the VR industry.
In April, VR platform Rec Room closed, and Polyarc Games announced layoffs affecting 30 employees.
Meta also reduced its Reality Labs workforce by 10%, with additional cuts reportedly affecting 700 roles across multiple divisions, including Reality Labs.
