Daredevil actor Charlie Cox has finally played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, having previously admitted to feeling like a “total fraud” whenever fans brought up his appearance in the game.

For Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the Marvel star only provided the voice of Gustave rather than full performance capture for the character, which meant his time actually spent recording for the project was minimal, while motion capture was separately filmed by another actor.

In June last year, Cox said he felt like a “total fraud” anytime someone gushed to him about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and admitted he had recorded all of his lines in around four hours.

The following month, Cox was asked about Clair Obscur again and admitted he was still to play it, and needed to buy a new games console first. “I remember being in the studio and thinking, ‘This is beautiful, the visuals are extraordinary,'” Cox said. “They’ve come a long way since Mario 64, which is probably the last computer game I played.”

Then, in November, Cox said that any awards he might win for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 should really be given to his character’s French motion capture artist instead. “Yes, I’m thrilled for this nomination,” Cox acknowledged. “I’ve said this before and I think it’s important to say: there’s an amazing French actor, by the name of Maxence Cazorla, who did almost all of the motion capture for that role in that game.

“So any nomination or credit I get, I really have to give to him — I believe that the performance of that character is really down to him, and my voice was just part of that process.” Cox had been nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025 for his role in Clair Obscur. The award went to fellow Clair Obscur co-star, Jennifer English.

Now, speaking to GamesRadar+, Cox has provided another update, saying he’s finally given Clair Obscur a try.

“I’ve since played a bit of it,” he said. “Not the whole thing, I haven’t completed it.” Then: “I’ve played the opening bit for a while and kind of walked around and met the people and garnered the information and all that kind of stuff. Not very well.”

“I’m not very good, because obviously, it’s a skill set, but I’ve played it,” he continued.

Last month, it emerged that Cox was working on a new video game project. Speaking to YouTube channel Agents of Fandom, Cox said his Clair Obscur role — his first in the realm of video games — had “opened a new avenue for my professional work” and inspired him to take on another video game project this year, one that he was “much more involved” in.
